My wife, Donna and I, both in our mid-eighties, moved into Applewood two months ago. The move was mainly precipitated by my declining health due to mobility and medical issues, but primarily to relieve Donna of the overwhelming extent of household chores, and administrative affairs while providing constant aid to me. Our choice of Applewood over other retirement residences in the surrounding area followed a rigorous comparison of cost, suite size, facilities, support staff and overall comfort level. As an aside, my mother lived here over 20 years ago and was remembered by some of the present staff. We were immediately impressed by the administrative, nursing and management team. From our first day here, these dedicated, service staff made us feel right at home. I had a truly lovely experience during my stay at Applewood. I came for a two month respite stay, and from the beginning, the staff were incredibly friendly, as were my fellow residents. The food was outstanding. While some dishes were different from what I typically cook at home, it was a treat to try new and exciting options. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. A plus! Most importantly, I came in using a wheelchair and left using only a walker. I am now able to be independent at home again, which means so much to me. My stay gave me the time and space to focus on getting better. I enjoyed walking around, participating in exercise classes, and even “exercising my arms” at Bingo. I also loved watching movies on the big screen and spending time by the bright windows watching the birds. All of my interactions were positive. I even had the unexpected joy of reconnecting with old friends, which made my stay even more special. I wish there was an option for "6 stars!" A big thank you to the wonderful staff! My experience with Applewood Retirement Residence has been exceptional!  My brother and I had the pleasure of dealing with the General Manager, Paul Humphreys.  At the end of December we had to quickly find a retirement home for our Mother.  We started looking at a few  retirement homes but once we came to Applewood, we looked no further.  Even though we just dropped in without an appointment, Paul was very accommodating.  He met with us right away, gave us a tour and answered any questions.  The thing that stood out about Applewood was the transparency about pricing.  Other places were not forthright with the pricing of additional services and it was difficult to get any answers.  Right away Paul gave us a price list of all the additional services that Applewood offer.  The first impression we got about the staff and residents was that everyone was friendly.  The place had a homey feel, somewhere you would want to send a parent to.  Since it was around Christmas, Paul even told us to call him at home if we had any more questions.  Of all the retirement homes we went to, Paul was the only person that followed up with us.  I think other retirement homes need to learn a few things from Applewood and follow their business model.  The timeline was quick but Paul made the transition easy.  Also, Paul went above and beyond by accommodating any requests we had in regards to the room we selected. This is one of the best retirement facilities in Peterborough and surrounding area. The staff is outstanding and very caring with every resident 24/7. We compared several of the other facilities in and around Peterborough and in my opinion Applewood is the best. Update: So we have been living at Applewood Retirment for just over 9 months now, and it's been a great experience and a wonderful place to live. We have an Orchard side apartment with a gorgeous view of Applewood's private park area with a paved walking path, which is great if you require a walker or wheelchair to get around.
